Ocean Commotion

On Thursday, November 13, 2008, the Louisiana Sea Grant College Program hosted its annual Ocean Commotion at the LSU Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The purpose of this event is to educate area students, ranging from K-8th grade, about the sea and coast that Louisiana's citizens are so dependent upon. Nearly 3,000 local area students, teachers, and chaperones participate in the event.

Among the 60 exhibitors were the LSU AAPG Students Chapter and the LSU Geology Club. These two groups from the LSU Department of Geology & Geophysics set up an exhibit on fossils and sedimentary rocks. They participated in activities with the children that taught them key concepts about fossils, including what they are, how they form, and why they form. The children thoroughly enjoyed learning in a hands on environment, where they could get down and dirty.
